About the museum

A first temporary display of the museum was set up in 1997, on the occasion of the Alpine Skiing World Championships. In August 1998 the museum opened to the public in the old village of La Ruà; in December 2002 it reopened in its present location, a house more than a hundred years old, bought and restored by the municipality in the Rivets hamlet. Management lies with the G. Guiot Bourg cultural foundation.

Everyday objects, used at home and at work, are presented in various rooms: the stable, the kitchen, the bedroom, the hayloft, the cellar and the typical “croutin”. The museum also preserves household linen, work and festive clothing, and the entire collection of antique and richly decorated costumes of Pragelato, which took their present form through the overlay of French-speaking Savoyard culture on the earlier culture of the Escartons. In the 19th century lighter fabrics, ribbons, lace and embroidery came into use, and the range of accessories includes brooches, earrings and, above all, gold crosses. The museum is also the starting point for routes to the hamlets, with bread ovens, old fountains and sundials.
