About the museum
The Nürnbergische Universität Altdorf, the “Altdorfina”, enjoyed a good reputation in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. The later military leader Wallenstein studied there, and in 1666 the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz received his doctorate in Altdorf. The university museum commemorates this small university.
The house, which opened in 1998, lies near the former university buildings and informs visitors about history, organization and teaching. Student life takes up a large part of the displays. A separate section is devoted to the scholarly achievements of the university, for example in experimental physics and fossil studies. The exhibits include an ichthyosaur about 2.5 meters long and roughly 180 million years old, and a fossil cabinet is attached.
In the museum courtyard lies the “Doktorsgärtlein” (little doctors' garden), where parts of the university's former botanical garden have been re-created and over 200 plant species grow. The museum has been closed for renovation and reconceptualization for some time.
