About the museum
In the first half of the 20th century the Bergedorf-Geesthachter Eisenbahn was an important link for commuters and freight; in 1918 it carried more than 20,000 passengers a day. After the Second World War it quickly lost importance, and in 1953 the last regular passenger train ran.
To keep the memory of the line alive, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Geesthachter Eisenbahn was founded in 1975. Its members tracked down old carriages of the railway all over Germany, brought them back and restored them. The first special train ran as early as 1976, and from 1977 with a steam locomotive. In 1981 the association bought a Class Q locomotive in Denmark, which was given the name “Karoline”.
Today the association owns five locomotives and 17 carriages. On selected operating weekends the trains run on the historic line between Bergedorf Süd and Geesthacht and on the Krümmelbahn, which was built in 1915/16 to the Krümmel dynamite factory. The vehicles are maintained and restored in the engine shed opposite Geesthacht station.
