About the museum
The Rieck Haus on the Curslacker Deich is one of the oldest surviving farmhouses in northern Germany. The core of this Low German hall house (Fachhallenhaus) was built around 1532/33 and was extended several times during the 16th century. Under its large thatched roof, the farming family, farmhands, and livestock lived together for generations; the farm remained in agricultural use until the late 20th century. The house takes its name from the Rieck family, who can be traced in the region for many generations.
Because the building was falling into increasing disrepair, Hamburg's monument preservation authority acquired it in 1940. After a thorough restoration from 1949 to 1954, it opened to visitors in 1954 as a branch of the Altonaer Museum. Today the open-air museum belongs to the Bergedorfer Museumslandschaft, which also includes the Bergedorf Museum in Bergedorf Castle.
Typical buildings of the Vierlande have been assembled around the main house, including a wooden drainage windmill from Ochsenwerder, a bakehouse from Neuengamme, and a granary with a height-adjustable roof. There is also a show garden with vegetables, herbs, and flowers, as well as beehives and farm implements. The permanent exhibition in the house tells the story of agriculture and horticulture bilingually in Standard German and Low German (Plattdeutsch), with films, listening stations, and hands-on stations. In the barn, the museum presents a new exhibition each year, created together with people from the region.
