About the museum
The Archäologie-Museum is one of the branch museums of the Archäologische Staatssammlung München and is located on the second upper floor of the Philipp-Wilhelm-Bau of Neuburg Castle, the former residence of the Principality of Palatinate-Neuburg. Alongside the museum on the history of the principality and the Staatsgalerie for Flemish Baroque painting, it is one of the exhibitions that the Free State of Bavaria presents in the castle.
The exhibition spans a broad arc from the history of the Earth to the Middle Ages. Fossils represent a long-vanished animal and plant world, while Palaeolithic finds from Mauern and from the Speckberg near Nassenfels represent the earliest traces of humans in southern Germany. Dioramas illustrate life in the Ice Age; these are followed by grave and settlement finds from the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age.
From Roman times, mainly stone monuments are on show. Finds from early medieval row graves and archaeological finds from Neuburg's old town conclude the tour. Because of renovation work the museum is currently closed; reopening is announced for mid-2028.
