About the museum
The painter and mosaic artist Carl Roesch (1884–1979) and the textile designer Margrit Roesch-Tanner (1880–1969) had a studio built outside the city walls of Diessenhofen starting in 1930; the residence was added two years later. Carl Roesch designed the plans himself, drawing inspiration from southern architecture, the Bauhaus and Le Corbusier. The reduced concrete flat-roofed building, with a large north window, a terrace with a view of the Rhine and a small pavilion, caused a great stir in 1932 as one of the first flat-roofed buildings in the canton and was presented in the magazine “Das Werk” in 1931. To this day it counts among the striking examples of modernism in Thurgau.
The building complex is largely preserved in its original condition and is privately owned. The studio displays painting equipment, a palette and brushes, numerous finished works, part of the library and the mosaic workshop, as well as textile patterns and drawings by Margrit Roesch. Among other works, Carl Roesch created mosaics for public buildings such as the Sihlpost in Zurich and the post office in Rapperswil.
The Carl und Margrit Roesch-Stiftung, founded in 2001, looks after the artistic estate, which is on deposit at the Kunstmuseum Thurgau in the Kartause Ittingen, and makes the studio accessible as a small meeting place: every year there are three to four public events, plus readings, lectures, workshops for school classes and guided tours that can be booked.
