About the museum
The archaeology museum opened in 1988 as a branch of the Archaeological State Collection in Munich in the Schranne, a granary built in 1693 in the old town of Bad Königshofen. After a comprehensive renovation of the building and exhibition, designed by the Stuttgart firm Space4, it reopened on 14 May 2019. A new building in the inner courtyard has since connected the Schranne with the neighbouring Salzhaus, which houses the Museum für Grenzgänger.
On around 400 square metres, the permanent exhibition presents more than 1,000 finds in 13 thematic sections, mainly from the districts of Bad Kissingen, Rhön-Grabfeld, Schweinfurt and Haßberge. At its heart is the Grabfeld, an early attested Franconian region whose inhabitants were first mentioned in a letter from Pope Gregory III in 739. Staged displays and media stations accompany the tour.
Among the highlights are richly furnished Hallstatt-period graves from nearby Großeibstadt and finds from the 6th-century Thuringian aristocratic burial ground of Zeuzleben. Finds from the High Middle Ages and the modern era conclude the exhibition. The ground-floor new building contains a room for museum education and the Stone Age workshop, where school classes in particular learn about prehistoric crafts.
