About the museum
The museum's history reflects how the people of the Grabfeld dealt with the inner-German border. As early as 1966, a border information office in Breitensee showed the region's first exhibition on the subject. After reunification, such facilities lost their political purpose, and their exhibits ended up in attics and cellars. The Verein für Heimatgeschichte (local history association) secured them and in 1992 opened a "Grenzmuseum" (border museum) in two rooms of the spa center (Kurzentrum) in Bad Königshofen.
Because the spa center was being renovated, the Grenzmuseum moved to Schloss Wolzogen in Mühlfeld in October 2000. For a lasting new start, the focus shifted to what connects people, the shared side of the border. On June 17, 2006, the "Museum für Grenzgänger – Nachbarn im Grabfeld" opened with roughly 150 square meters of exhibition space and media rooms.
It shows documents and objects from eyewitnesses who describe how the people of the Grabfeld experienced the border: before 1945, with close neighborly ties, and from 1945 to 1989, when crossing the border was often life-threatening. The museum is located in the Schranne and shares the building with the Archäologiemuseum (archaeology museum) and the "Treffpunkt Grabfeld" (meeting point).
