About the museum

The Archäologisches Museum Geldersheim opened on April 6, 2001. Its foundation is the collection of Geldersheim general practitioner Dr. Hans Hahn (1921–2001), who over decades gathered surface finds in the fields around the village and alerted the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege (state heritage office) to construction work where finds could be secured. In 1996 he left the largest part of his collection to the municipality, which then set up the museum.

The exhibition is housed in part of the Kirchgaden – small storage buildings attached to the wall of the fortified church, which probably dates from the 14th century. In times of siege they served as storerooms and refuge; some Gaden bear dates from the 16th century. Since 1988 the Gaden complex has been comprehensively renovated.

The exhibition leads through the settlement history of the Geldersheim area: stone tools and decorated pottery of the first farmers, a clay horse idol from the Bronze Age, Celtic glass bracelets, Germanic combs, and Roman imported goods. The collection is supplemented by loans from other collectors in the area and by finds from an excavation in the 1980s in the Geldersheim churchyard around the Frühmesskapelle (early Mass chapel).
