About the museum
The Old Gymnasium (Alte Gymnasium) on Martin-Luther-Platz is a Renaissance building from 1582/83 in front of the Johanniskirche. It was the main building of the Städtische Sammlungen Schweinfurt and presented the town's history: early history from the 9th century, the Free Imperial City period (Reichsstadtzeit), bourgeois culture, guild life and the beginnings of industrialization, plus Friedrich Rückert and a department "Welt des Kindes" (World of the Child).
The museum has been closed to visitors since August 2015. The city is building a cultural forum in the old town that will combine the Old Gymnasium, the neighboring Stadtschreiberhaus and the Reichsvogtei with a new building into a multifunctional ensemble. The Old Gymnasium is to become an "action house" (Aktionshaus) where creativity takes center stage; part of the project is a newly designed city museum.
