About the museum
The collector Hermann Wurdinger, himself born in Saaz (Žatec), began gathering books, documents, pictures and souvenirs from the Bohemian hop town in the 1960s. When his collection became too large, it first found a room in the Roth district office in 1987 and later, following a district council resolution of 1999, two rooms in the Markgräfliches Jagdschlösschen (Margrave's hunting lodge) in Georgensgmünd. There the local heritage room grew into a local history museum with more than 2,500 exhibits.
Later the Stiftung Saazer Heimatmuseum (Saaz Local History Museum Foundation) took over the sponsorship. It acquired a townhouse on Obere Straße in Schweinfurt, which was set up as a branch and opened on September 22, 2012. The local heritage room in Georgensgmünd has since been dissolved; the collection is to be presented in a redesigned form in the Schweinfurt house, and the reopening is announced for 2027.
The museum sees itself less as a traditional museum than as an information center and memorial site. It commemorates the German history of the town of Saaz, the expulsion of Germans in 1945/46, and the victims of that time. The facilities include a computer where the collection's pictures and documents can be viewed and printed.
