About the museum

The industrialist Ernst Sachs had the building constructed to plans by Roderich Fick for his 60th birthday and gave it to the city as a public indoor swimming bath, completed in 1933. After bomb damage in 1944, the bath reopened in 1949; until about 1956 it also temporarily housed the Amerika-Haus with a film and reading room.

In 2003 the city council decided to convert the bath into the new home of the municipal art collection; swimming operations ended in August 2004. The Kunsthalle opened on May 28, 2009. The exterior of the building remained unchanged, while characteristic spatial elements were preserved inside. Large temporary exhibitions are now held in the nine-meter-high former swimming hall; projects such as the 2013 Bavarian State Exhibition "Main und Meer" and the exhibition on the Gunter Sachs collection made the museum known beyond the region.

The permanent collection "Kunst nach 1945 in Deutschland" was rearranged for its tenth anniversary and has been shown on two levels since July 2019. The first floor focuses on Informel and Neofiguration, with works by groups such as ZEN 49, Quadriga, junger westen and SPUR; the basement presents socio-political positions, landscape and architectural pictures. Since March 2026, the Fritz Glöckle icon collection has also been on view there in dialogue with contemporary art. In terms of period, the collection continues where the neighboring Museum Georg Schäfer leaves off.
