About the museum
The nature museum goes back to Augsburg polymath Dr. Heinz Fischer (1911–1991), who researched the local heaths and the Lech as a habitat. Between 1922 and 1956 he photographed the river in its original state. In 1983, during his lifetime, he opened a natural history museum in Königsbrunn to show his research findings, photographs and rare taxidermy specimens.
After Fischer's death in 1991 the exhibition initially remained unchanged. The Freundeskreis Dr. Heinz Fischersammlungen then worked to preserve and modernize the collections, as part of the regional development concept "Begegnungsland Lech-Wertach" and in cooperation with the city of Königsbrunn. Today the association Naturmuseum Königsbrunn runs the house on a volunteer basis; it sees itself as an out-of-school learning venue.
The museum is at Schwabenstraße 38, below the music school, in the same building as the Lechfeldmuseum. The air-conditioned rooms cover the habitats of forest, meadow and water: a nine-meter-long diorama of the wild Lech, the Lech heaths with over 50 specimens, an evolution room, a forest room with a birdsong quiz, a meadow room with hands-on stations, a water room with microscopes, and a researcher's room with over 50 boxes from Fischer's insect collection.
