The exhibition in the Stiftungshaus in Bargfeld is devoted to the design of covers and bindings of Arno Schmidt's books. Visits are only possible by prior appointment.
About the museum
The writer Arno Schmidt (1914–1979) lived with his wife Alice in the heath village of Bargfeld near Celle from 1958 until his death. His late major works were written here, including the monumental "Zettel’s Traum."
After Alice Schmidt's death in 1983, the Arno Schmidt Stiftung, which she had founded in 1981 together with Jan Philipp Reemtsma, became the sole heir to the rights to the complete works. The foundation administers the estate of both spouses, looks after the house, garden, grave and archive, and runs the Arno Schmidt Gedächtnisstätte (memorial site).
Visitors can get to know the house on a guided tour. Exhibitions on his life and work are also shown in the foundation house. Scholars and writers can use the library of primary and secondary literature on Schmidt after registering.
