About the museum
In 1984, the Langlingen municipal council decided to set up a small local history museum in the restored granary of the Grethenhof. Citizens collected, documented and reworked objects, so that the house could open for the harvest thanksgiving festival (Erntedankfest) in 1988 with 164 exhibits. In January 1989, the friends' association Förderkreis Dorfmuseum Langlingen was founded; it has since taken over the upkeep and operation, while the plot and buildings belong to the municipality.
The museum grew quickly: from 1990, rooms in the Greithen Hüs were added; in 1992 the former communal cold-storage facility, used as the museum hall (Museumsdiele); in 1993 the Göpelhaus with a horse-powered drive (Pferdegöpel); in 1995 the herb garden; and in 1999 the museum café together with the gateway of the former Greithen barn. In 2005, the attic of the Greithen Hüs was converted into an exhibition space for plows and other implements.
The collection now comprises more than 4,600 machines, tools, books, textiles and documents. Under the motto "Das lebendige Museum" (The Living Museum), machines and tools are actually put to use in demonstrations, for example threshing with the horse-powered drive at the harvest festival.
