About the museum

On 27 April 1996 the municipality of Klingenmünster opened the museum in memory of the writer and regional poet August Becker (1828–1891). Becker was born in what was then the town's Protestant schoolhouse, lived in Eisenach from 1868 and was later buried in an honorary grave in the Klingenmünster mountain cemetery. He became known above all for his 1858 book "Die Pfalz und die Pfälzer".

The core of the collection consists of works from family ownership that his granddaughter Frieda Becker bequeathed to the municipality – including a first edition of "Die Pfalz und die Pfälzer". Besides Becker's writings, the museum also sheds light on the history of Klingenmünster.

The building on Steinstraße was built in 1765 as a town hall and served as a Protestant school in the 19th century. Today, besides the museum, it houses the office of the local mayor, the council chamber and the municipal library. Above the entrance is an old coat-of-arms stone showing the original form of the town's coat of arms, a memorial plaque commemorates Becker, and a monument from 1907 stands just a few steps away.
