About the museum
The Museum unterm Trifels lies at the eastern entrance to Annweiler's old town, right on the Schipkapass, and is run by the town of Annweiler am Trifels. On around 800 square meters it shows how the town, the nearby imperial castle of Trifels and the surrounding landscape have developed.
The exhibition is housed in three half-timbered houses and a former water mill. Its themes are arranged by floor: on the first floor, prehistory and early history; above that, castles and the Staufer dynasty; then town and crafts; and at the top, the forest as a habitat.
Particularly vivid are the displays on Emperor Frederick II, a re-created medieval masons' lodge, and the evidence of the tanning trade, with rare drying lofts and drying galleries. Opposite lies an associated tanner's workshop. Parts of the collection can also be viewed online via Museum Digital Rheinland-Pfalz.
