Dampflok-Museum Hermeskeil

Private locomotive collection in the former Hermeskeil locomotive depot with a roundhouse, turntable and more than 50 steam, diesel and electric locomotives.

About the museum

The locomotive depot in the small Hunsrück town of Hermeskeil began in 1888 as a small engine station and was upgraded to an independent depot in 1903. Over time, an engine shed with just two stalls grew into a six-stall roundhouse, and the turntable was enlarged from 13 to 16 meters. As rail traffic declined, the facility lost importance: from 1959 it was merely an outpost of the Simmern depot and was later abandoned altogether.

In 1986 railway enthusiast Bernd Falz bought the site from the Deutsche Bundesbahn and made it the home of his private locomotive collection. Today more than 50 original locomotives built between 1913 and 1976 stand here – some in the roundhouse, most on the outdoor grounds. In addition to steam locomotives of numerous classes, the collection includes diesel and electric locomotives, tenders, a steam crane, draisines and freight cars.

The museum is not run by a large association but as a private collection with a few volunteer helpers, and it is open only on weekends during the summer months. Together with the owner's second collection in Falkenberg/Elster in Brandenburg, where around 100 more locomotives, mostly from former Deutsche Reichsbahn stock, are stored, it is considered one of the largest private locomotive collections in Europe.
