About the museum

The Hochwaldmuseum in Hermeskeil is devoted to the life, work and culture of the Hochwald region, with a focus on the 19th and 20th centuries. Its foundation is the collection of local researcher Edmund Schömer; the content concept was led by the Kulturgeschichtlicher Verein Hochwald (cultural history association).

The house was redesigned in 2003 and does not see itself as a classic local history museum: instead of display cases, it relies on real-life reconstructions, fictional conversations, information banners, and image and sound contributions. In 2005 it received the first museum award of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate for this approach.

The tour leads from early traces of human life, past a walk-through photo album of the town, to kitchen, parlor and bedroom, as well as a school scene. Further areas show linen production from flax to loom, dairy processing, washing and home slaughtering; in the basement, village crafts include a nail forge and a print shop.
