Bahnpark Augsburg
Railway museum in the listed Augsburg locomotive depot, with the “Rundhaus Europa” roundhouse, steam locomotives from all over Europe, and a miniature railway.
About the museum
Around 1906, the Royal Bavarian State Railways built an extensive locomotive depot south of Augsburg's main station: two roundhouses with turntables, workshops, cleaning facilities, and lodgings for locomotive crews. Up to 120 steam locomotives were serviced here. The site came through World War II largely unscathed, remained in operation until around 1990, and large parts of it have been listed monuments since 1996.
In 2005, the nonprofit Bahnpark Augsburg gGmbH was founded, backed by a foundation established by resolution of the city council. In 2008, the company acquired the roundhouse, the steam locomotive hall, and the crew lodging building from Deutsche Bahn for a symbolic one euro. Between 2013 and 2015, the roof of the roundhouse was renovated, and since 2015 the large turntable has been working again. A planning approval decision from 2017 allows the Bahnpark to run its own rail operations as a railway infrastructure company; however, due to official requirements, visits were only possible to a limited extent between 2017 and early 2020.
The centerpiece is the “Rundhaus Europa”: the state railways of the EU countries are invited to each display a historic ambassador locomotive there. In addition, there are German steam and electric locomotives, an active museum workshop, a historic smithy, and a garden railway for children. In 2026, the site is undergoing extensive renovation and conversion, while museum operations continue with restrictions.
