About the museum

The thatched cottage in Haseldorf was built in 1764 directly on the old Elbe dike. Its last resident was the hoop maker (Bandreißer) Hermann Lüchau, which is why the house is also called Lüchaukate in the village. Bandreißer made, from split willow poles, the hoops that held wooden barrels together. Haseldorf and neighboring Hetlingen were considered the best-known Bandreißer villages of the Elbe marshes until the 1960s; during the season almost all residents helped with debarking the poles, even the children.

In 1992 the municipality of Haseldorf acquired the cottage from the heirs of the Lüchau family in order to preserve a piece of village history. After an extensive renovation co-financed by the state and the district of Pinneberg, the building, largely preserved in its original condition, was handed over as a museum cottage in August 1995. In November of the same year, 41 interested people founded the Kulturverein Haseldorfer Marsch, which has run the house on a volunteer basis ever since; in 2005 the association, together with the municipality, also had the historic outbuildings restored.

On display are the hoop-maker's workshop, the historic kitchen, and two living areas that make the work and life of hoop-making families in the 19th and early 20th centuries understandable. The association continually adds tools, household goods, and clothing to the furnishings. In addition, the cottage is a venue for concerts, readings, exhibitions, and courses and serves as a location for civil weddings.
