About the museum

Prussia built the fort on the bank of the Lower Elbe between 1868 and 1873, with interruptions, to block enemy ships from reaching Hamburg. The complex has an elongated hexagonal layout, an earthen rampart about ten meters high with casemates facing the Elbe, a masonry escarp and a wide moat crossed by a bridge leading to the gate.

During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, the fort was only provisionally ready for defense, and there was never any fighting. In World War II, anti-aircraft guns were stationed here. After 1945 the British Army requisitioned the undamaged fortress; it served as emergency housing until the 1950s, after which a company dismantled munitions there until 1985.

Since 1997 the volunteer association Festung Grauerort e. V. has been working to preserve and restore the site; since 1998 the listed monument has once again been open to the public. With donations and volunteer labor – around 7,600 volunteer hours in 2021 alone – roofs and masonry are being repaired and later additions removed. Today the casemates and inner courtyard host exhibitions on the fortress's history, art and crafts, and a narrow-gauge railway loop runs around the complex. The fortress belongs to the Forte Cultura network and is a venue for markets, concerts, fortress breakfasts and civil wedding ceremonies.
