About the museum

The museum of city and local history is run by the association Historisches Uetersen e. V., which opened it in 1995 and has operated it on a volunteer basis ever since. Members supervise on opening days, continually expand the exhibition and regularly prepare special exhibitions.

The museum is housed in a protected building about 150 years old that formerly served as a workshop of the Uetersen municipal utilities. It is somewhat hidden in the complex of the former Stadtwerkehaus at the corner of Parkstraße/Bleekerstraße, not far from the old town and the convent.

The exhibition traces Uetersen's development from a medieval settlement to the present. Themes include guilds and crafts, rose growing, shipping, shipyards and whaling. On display are, for example, an original bakery, a shoemaker's workshop, a middle-class parlor, a historic dollhouse, paper models of the old town and convent, and memorabilia of the narrow-gauge railway "Emma" between Uetersen and Tornesch. There are also construction drawings for Franz Kruckenberg's Schienenzeppelin (rail zeppelin), engines from the Pinneberg ILO works and pictures by the painter Kurt Roth. Historic picture books of old Uetersen can be viewed on site.
