About the museum

The Bauernhaus Habach is a southwestern German single-roof farmhouse (Einhaus), in which living quarters, stable and barn lie under one common roof. The main building was completed in 1847; in 1896 a horse stable and a shed with a forge were added.

In 1990 the municipality of Eppelborn bought the property and had it carefully restored. It opened on June 2, 1994 as a museum of rural life, and that same year the restoration was honored with the Saarland Monument Preservation Prize. Since 1995 the house has been looked after by the Stiftung Kulturgut Gemeinde Eppelborn.

In the living quarters, the parlor, bedroom and kitchen are furnished, with tools such as a butter churn and a centrifuge, along with a smoking chamber on the upper floor and a vaulted cellar with a baking oven and a sauerkraut trough. The farm section shows a cow stable, threshing floor, horse stable and a workshop with a forge as well as workplaces of a cooper and a shoemaker; looms and spinning wheels stand on the upper floor. Outside, a farm garden and historic cobblestone paving complete the ensemble. Open meetings, art exhibitions and events for Open Monument Day regularly take place in the house.
