About the museum
The Bauernkriegshaus on Kirchstraße in Nußdorf was built around 1500 as a residence and destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. In 1671/72 a half-timbered building was erected on the old stone foundation; the older house tablet of the lay judge Hans Hol was reused as a windowsill. Until 1976 the property served as a farm and was then to be sold and demolished. The Protestant parish bought the house and saved it; since then, its renovation and upkeep have been financed in part by the annual farmhouse festival on the last weekend of August.
Nußdorf is considered the starting point of the Palatinate Peasants' War of 1525. The museum, run by the Historische Arbeitskreis Bauernkriegshaus Nußdorf e. V., is divided into three areas. The Peasants' War museum uses three rooms to show the situation of farmers in the Middle Ages, the route of the Nußdorf band and the Battle of Pfeddersheim, recreated with around 1,200 tin figures. The Pfarrer-Lehmann-Stube commemorates the chronicler Johann Georg Lehmann, who was pastor in the village from 1846 to 1876. The village museum gathers documents, pictures and everyday objects on local history, including records of the 1585 witch trial.
A historical walk with fourteen information boards leads through the wine-growing village. The association is a member of the working group of German Peasants' War museums and of the working group Places of Democracy History.
