About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Böchingen, officially the Haus der Südostdeutschen (House of the Southeast Germans), goes back to an initiative of Böchingen teacher Theodor Walter. It was built between 1964 and 1971, largely through self-help and donations: the house was handed over for its purpose in September 1966, and the extension followed in August 1971. Walter wanted to create a culture and meeting center for all Southeast Germans and collected cultural objects and archival materials that had survived flight and expulsion.

The house is dedicated above all to the Danube Swabians, who emigrated about 300 years ago under the Habsburgs, some of them from the Palatinate, into the Pannonian region. On about 300 square meters, the exhibition shows the life and work of Germans in Southeastern Europe, from the settlement of the Banat and the Batschka through their heyday to expulsion. Special pieces include the depiction of the resettlement history in concrete and leaded glass, the sgraffito "Ahnenerbe" (Ancestral Heritage) on the façade, a series of pictures on flight and expulsion, a gallery of traditional costumes, and two wagons that made it to the Palatinate in 1944.

Because the museum stands in Böchingen, it also shows Palatine cultural heritage from crafts, agriculture and viticulture, such as parts of a former cooperage and an old grape mill. The sponsor is the Kuratorium Haus der Südostdeutschen e.V.; the house is run by Reinhold Walter.
