About the museum
A city archive in Landau can be documented as far back as the Middle Ages. Today the city archive and the municipal museum form a joint department of the city administration. Since 2009 both have been housed in the former railway post office, a building inaugurated in 1897 directly opposite the main station on Maximilianstraße.
The Museum of City History in the attic was completely renovated and redesigned. On around 250 square metres, it tells the story chronologically from the granting of town rights in 1274 to the State Garden Show in 2015. The leitmotif is Landau as a Franco-German border town: after the Thirty Years' War, France laid claim to the town on the Queich, followed by fortress construction, sieges, changes of rule and large garrisons that shaped the townscape and daily life for centuries.
Only objects from the museum's own holdings are shown, supplemented by interactive media stations. Urban development and the living conditions of the population stand side by side on an equal footing. At the centre is a model of the fortress made around 1740, which was elaborately restored for the redesign.
