About the museum

The pilgrimage church of the Most Holy Trinity in Kößlarn has the last completely preserved medieval fortification in the Old Bavarian region. The wall ring with two gates and the houses for the parish priest, the sexton and the benefice holders date from the fifteenth century. The 50-meter tower was built in 1509 and received a dome in 1730.

Two gatehouses with their medieval rooms, and the covered wall walk with its embrasures between them, were opened as a museum in 2008. The museum is run by the Pfarrkirchenstiftung Kößlarn (parish church foundation) and operates entirely on a voluntary basis. It is financially supported by the Förderkreis Kirchenmuseum Kößlarn e. V. (friends' association).

On about 120 square meters, the permanent exhibition covers the fortified church complex, the pilgrimage to the Kößlarn miracle image, and church customs throughout the year. The most valuable pieces include pilgrimage souvenirs from four centuries, a late Gothic palm donkey with Christ in the tomb, the oldest chasuble in the Diocese of Passau, and a baroque nativity set with figures from the Schwanthaler workshop. The museum also has a non-electric tower clock mechanism from 1909, which was made to run again in 2011 and can be demonstrated with hourly chiming.
