About the museum
The municipal museum is housed in the Baroque former Nassau chancellery building on Schlossplatz, more than 300 years old, and combines two museums under one roof on around 1,200 square meters. It is considered the oldest mining museum in Hesse; a major fire in October 1972 destroyed not only outbuildings of the castle but also parts of the then local history and mining museum.
The show mine beneath the building cannot be seen from outside: the roughly 200-meter-long "Tiefer Stollen" in the Schlossberg shows mining, haulage technology and shaft and gallery construction with operational original machines, and brings the working world underground to life. The exhibition on the ground floor covers mining in the region – the extraction of iron ore, slate, phosphorite and marble, as well as clay mining in the Lahn-Dill area.
The entire first floor is devoted to the town's history. A chronological tour with exhibits, pictures and explanations runs from the first mention of Weilburg in 906 up to the present; along the way, visitors encounter, among others, Conrad I, the first German king, and Heinrich von Gagern, the first president of the Frankfurt National Assembly. A show library presents valuable books from several centuries, including one of the few complete collections of Merian engravings from the 17th century. The "Kleines Kabinett" hosts temporary exhibitions, readings, theater and lectures. The museum is part of the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus Geopark.
