About the museum

The synagogue on what is now Gustav-Weil-Straße was built in 1821/22 to plans by Johann Ludwig Weinbrenner, a nephew of the Baden master builder Friedrich Weinbrenner, in a mixture of late Baroque and neoclassical forms. After Karlsruhe and Randegg, it was the third new synagogue building in the Grand Duchy of Baden. Together with the Jewish community house on the same street, it formed the center of Sulzburg's large Jewish community.

In November 1938 the prayer room was desecrated, the furnishings destroyed, and the windows smashed; the building was not set on fire because of the closely adjoining houses. Sulzburg's Jews were taken to concentration camps and later deported to Gurs. Afterward the former synagogue served as a storage space, among other things for the Freiburg University Library, as a stable, and as a small factory.

On the initiative of the Landesdenkmalamt (state monuments office), an emigrated native of Sulzburg, and the then mayor, the building passed into municipal ownership in the mid-1970s and was restored as a cultural monument and memorial. It is considered the only undestroyed synagogue of the Weinbrenner school in Baden-Württemberg. The Freundeskreis Ehemalige Synagoge Sulzburg (friends' association) organizes exhibitions, commemorative events, and tours; the orientalist Gustav Weil, born in Sulzburg, is also remembered there.
