About the museum
The Keramikmuseum Staufen is closely tied to the town's pottery tradition: already in the Middle Ages, potters (Hafner) worked in Staufen and made everyday earthenware. The former Hafnerhaus on the edge of the old town bears witness to this; its last residents were the potter Josef Maier and the art ceramicist Egon Bregger, who lived and worked there. The building has been a museum since 1991. The workshop, with its clay pit, potter's wheel and two wood-fired kilns protected as historic monuments, has been preserved.
Josef Maier (1871–1948) initially made utility pottery and, when factory-made goods cut into the potters' sales, developed colorful decorative ceramics with folk sayings. His son-in-law Egon Bregger (1902–1966), trained in the workshop of Otto Lindig in Dornburg, which grew out of the Bauhaus, turned the craft business into an artistic laboratory and made stoneware vases and bowls. The clay figures by the artist Elisabeth Winter-Bonn (1919–2003) address human weaknesses and contain socially critical messages.
The museum, which belongs to the Badisches Landesmuseum, has three areas: the historic Hafnerhaus, a space for exhibitions that change every year, drawn from the ceramics holdings of the Landesmuseum, and the STUDIO, a modern extension. There, the friends' association Förderkreis Keramikmuseum Staufen, founded in 1994, presents works by contemporary ceramicists several times a year. More than 200 artists have already used the STUDIO.
