About the museum
The Landesbergbaumuseum Baden-Württemberg opened in 1982 in the former Protestant town church of Sulzburg. The church had been built in 1834–35 to plans by Heinrich Hübsch and was converted into a museum in 1979. The museum was run by the town of Sulzburg; the state took part in choosing its name.
The exhibition showed the history of mining in the state: from the extraction of hematite, which began in Sulzburg around 7,000 years ago, through silver mining in the Black Forest to oil production in the 20th century. The collection includes tools, miners' lamps, mine plans and large equipment, as well as a reconstructed section of tunnel and maps of the spread of mining and of working conditions. The museum was also the starting point of a roughly five-kilometer mining trail in the Sulzbach valley.
On October 1, 2023, the museum moved out of the church after 41 years and has been closed until further notice. The objects are in storage or on loan to other museums and have been digitally recorded. The town hopes to show the collection again in future, close to the center; a location and a date have not yet been decided.
