About the museum

The Bezirksmuseum (district museum) has its origins in artists of the Dachau artists' colony, including Hans von Hayek, Hermann Stockmann and August Pfaltz, who founded a museum association at the beginning of the 20th century. The collection was first shown to the public in Dachau Palace as early as 1905.

The museum had to close in 1958, but the holdings gathered over decades were preserved. It reopened in 1987, and since 1988 it has been run by the Zweckverband Dachauer Galerien und Museen, a joint body of the town and district of Dachau. In 1993 the museum received the Bavarian Museum Prize.

Today the museum is housed in the former Kastenamt (granary office) of the Dachau district court, a late 18th-century building in the old town that was extensively renovated in 2005. Around 2,000 objects are on display on three floors: from a large model of the market town of Dachau around 1700 to crafts and guilds, farmhouse parlors, Dachau traditional costumes and evidence of popular piety, including an exceptionally extensive collection of amulets. Regular special exhibitions complement the tour.
