Opening hoursAdmission €2

About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Karlsfeld was founded in 1995 as a non-profit association and opened in 2003 in the settler's house from 1802 owned by the Freis family. Since 2011 the museum has been housed in the Old Town Hall on Gartenstraße. It is run by volunteer association members; the curator is the historian Ilsa Oberbauer.

The exhibition traces the development of Karlsfeld, founded in 1802 in the Dachau Moos (moor) along the road connecting Munich and Dachau: from the street village of the moor farmers to a suburban municipality of Munich. On display are, among other things, a model of a peat hut, tools for moor cultivation, and views of the first houses according to the 1802 settlement plan.

Further rooms are devoted to school life, the economy, administration and club life, and religious customs. One focus is the reception of expellees after the Second World War, with costumes, maps and mementos of flight and expulsion; there is also a room on the 1950s and exhibits on the twin-town partnership with Muro Lucano.
