Kunst braucht Luft! Die Künstlergruppe Scholle zwischen See und Moor

The exhibition introduces the artists' group Scholle, founded in Munich in 1899 around Leo Putz, Max Feldbauer, Fritz Erler, and Adolf Münzer, and shows the role Munich, Dachau, and Holzhausen am Ammersee played in their vividly colored painting.

About the museum

The gallery's roots go back to the heyday of the Dachau artists' colony. In 1903, the painter Hans von Hayek and other Dachau citizens founded a museum association that collected works by the many artists working in the town and in the Dachauer Moos, the surrounding moorland. In 1908, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria opened the first picture gallery in two rooms of Dachau Palace, where it remained until 1958.

After a long period without permanent exhibition space, the museum association inventoried and expanded its holdings from the 1970s onward. In 1985, the Gemäldegalerie moved into its current building in the old town, opposite the town hall. Since 1988 it has been run by the Zweckverband Dachauer Galerien und Museen, a joint association that also operates the Bezirksmuseum (district museum). A 2005 renovation added a modern special exhibition area on the upper floor and a roof terrace.

The permanent collection comprises around 200 paintings and a few sculptures. It shows how landscape painting in and around Dachau developed from the mid-19th century into the 20th century – from early plein-air painters such as Eduard Schleich and Carl Spitzweg, through the Neu-Dachau group around Adolf Hölzel and Ludwig Dill, to visiting artists such as Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth. Changing special exhibitions explore individual artists, groups, and themes of the colony in depth.
