About the museum
The museum introduces visitors to the living conditions of the people who founded the settlement of Gröbenzell in the Dachau Moos. The village is first mentioned in 1570 as the seat of a toll station, which explains the name element "zell." Peat cutting shaped the area: peat was an important fuel and provided a livelihood for many families, but the work was hard, and at times children had to pitch in as well.
Other topics include the construction of the Munich–Augsburg railway line in 1839 and the town's own station from 1898, as well as agriculture and crafts, and the hornless goat breed that was successfully bred in Gröbenzell and sold well beyond Bavaria. A full-size replica of a living room in the former "Möslerhäuser" (Mösler houses) shows how people lived at the time. Information boards and dioramas also explain the geological development of the peat bog.
The exhibition is housed on the attic floor of the Alte Schule, which was built in 1925 together with the St. Johann Baptist parish church. The elementary school, originally a single-classroom school, was later repurposed and in 1999 was restored and rebuilt according to the original plans. Today the building also houses an inn and association rooms. The museum goes back to Horst Hell and has been run by volunteers since 2000 by the Historischer Verein Gröbenzell, the "Gröbenhüter."
