About the museum
The Blaudruckerei im Kattrepel is located in a storehouse from 1822 in the middle of Jever, on a small side street of the pedestrian zone. Workshop and sales room share one roof: anyone entering the shop looks straight into the work area. Blaudruck, in which white patterns are created on an indigo-blue ground, has been listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2016.
More than three decades ago, Georg Stark brought the almost vanished craft back to Jever. Through years of research and travel, he gathered around 600 historical printing blocks, called Modeln, from various periods; they are still used in the workshop today. In early 2021 he handed the business over to his successor, who had learned the craft from him and now continues it with a small team.
In craft demonstrations, visitors see how the printing paste is applied with the block onto the white fabric, how the cloth is dyed in an indigo vat, and how it is then rinsed, revealing the typical white patterns. They also learn where the craft comes from. The shop sells hand-printed textiles such as tablecloths, runners and cushions; custom orders and printing on fabric brought along are also possible.
