About the museum
The Peldemühle was built in 1741 by Poppe Embcken and is the landmark of Wittmund. It is considered the oldest single-story, fully functional gallery windmill in Germany. The name goes back to an old term for a hulling mill, which was in use in northern Germany and the Netherlands.
In 1974 the auctioneer Johann Ihnen acquired the mill to save it from decay. Today it belongs to the Johann und Helene Ihnen Stiftung, founded in 2006, which looks after preservation and upkeep of the monument. Since 2015 the Förderverein Peldemühle Wittmund e. V. (friends' association) and its volunteers have run the operation and made the mill accessible to visitors.
The octagonal building is 16.5 meters high; the two continuous sails each measure a good 20 meters, and in winds of force 5 to 6 the mill produces around 30 hp. Visitors can look inside, with a guided tour on request; in the coach house, tea, coffee and cake are served, and on baking days bread is baked in the bakehouse next to the mill.
