About the museum
The Dorfmuseum Zeißholz is housed in one of the oldest surviving three-sided farmsteads in Upper Lusatia. The farmstead is documented as early as 1401, the same year the village, founded by Sorbian smallholders, was first mentioned. Rebuilt many times after fires, the house still shows its original log construction at its core.
In 1972 the building stood empty. The then head of the community cultural center, Heinz Robel, obtained the necessary official confirmations to preserve it. It has been a protected monument since 1974, and objects from coal mining and from the village's rural life began to be collected. Numerous volunteers set the house up as a village museum.
Today it presents some 150 years of farming and mining history. The mining room displays photographs of the briquette factories and many decorative briquettes; one room is devoted to Sorbian customs. The outdoor area holds machine parts from the Zeißholz briquette factory. The museum is run by the association Für Zeißholz e. V., founded in 2006.
