About the museum
On November 6, 1632, two armies with a combined strength of around 35,000 soldiers met near Lützen. The battle is among the best known of the Thirty Years' War and ended without a clear victor; the Swedish king Gustavus II Adolphus and up to 9,000 men were left on the field.
The Museum Lützen 1632 was created to commemorate the many who fell. It displays historical finds and presents a mass grave that serves as both a memorial and an anti-war monument. The exhibition documents the suffering of those who were killed and aims to take away the anonymity of the dead.
The house sees itself as a historical museum, a memorial site, and a forum for discussion of the causes and consequences of violence. It is closely linked to the historic ensemble of the Gustav Adolf Memorial (Gustav-Adolf-Gedenkstätte); the admission ticket is also valid for that site and for the museum in Lützen Castle.
