Brandenburgisches Eisenbahnmuseum Falkenberg (Elster)
Association-run museum in the former railway depot on the history of the Falkenberg/Elster rail junction, with steam locomotive 52 5679.
About the museum
The first steps toward a railway museum came around 1980, when railway workers at the Falkenberg depot set up a "Technical Cabinet" on regional railway history. In September 1989, steam locomotive 52 5679, the steam locomotive that was based in Falkenberg the longest, was put on display there as a technical monument.
In 1993, railway workers, citizens, and the city and district administrations founded the friends' association "Brandenburgisches Eisenbahnmuseum Falkenberg (Elster)". The first exhibition opened on December 7, 1994, in the station's reception hall. Because Deutsche Bahn wanted to use the rooms itself again in 1998, the museum had to move, shortly before the anniversary "150 Years of Railways in Falkenberg", to a building on the station forecourt, which, however, proved unsuitable as a permanent solution.
In 2006 the association was able to take over the former canteen of the former railway depot; the museum opened there on July 15, 2006, at its present location. It shows the history of the Falkenberg/Elster rail junction, for example with model railway layouts, signal box technology, Reichsbahn uniforms, historic telephones, and numerous photos. A model railway group of the association works with children and teenagers.
