Bürstenbindermuseum Ramberg
Association-run museum in a former cooperative brush factory, showing the craft, industry, and everyday life of Ramberg's brush makers.
About the museum
Since the 18th century, the Palatinate Forest village of Ramberg was known far beyond the region for its brush makers and brush peddlers. From wood and broom plants, the villagers made brooms, brushes, and scrubbing brushes; in the 19th century, much of the village lived from this trade. Around 1907 there were eight brush and twig broom factories, and Ramberg peddlers sold the goods throughout Germany and in other European countries.
After a major strike in 1907, a brush factory run on a cooperative basis was established. In 1997 the Heimat- und Museumsverein des Bürstenmacherhandwerks Ramberg (local history and museum association of the brush-making craft) set up the museum in this building on Hauptstraße; it is still run by volunteers today.
The exhibition documents the development from cottage industry to factory production between roughly 1800 and 1970. On display are tools, workshops, and machines, some of them still in working order, as well as living quarters that illustrate family life in the village, and a life-size figure of a brush peddler in period clothing. A further permanent exhibition is devoted to the three castles around Ramberg: Ramburg, Neuscharfeneck, and Meistersel.
