About the museum

The open-air museum goes back to an initiative from Hollen: at the end of 1996 a peat barge was purchased, in June 1998 the friends' association "Freunde und Förderer des Freilichtmuseums Jan vom Moor und Klappstau" was founded, and in September 1998 the site was inaugurated. In 2001 a moor cottage rebuilt after 18th-century plans was added.

The site lies on the towpath of the old Schiffgraben canal, along which peat from the moor near Hollen was transported to brickworks and to the harbor on the Geeste. On display are a Klappstau – a simple weir device that allowed peat boats to overcome differences in height in the canal without a lock –, the peat barge, information boards, and, in the cottage, the tools for peat cutting.

The theme is the hard life of the first moor settlers, who could live off their land only after generations. The friends' association also looks after a school museum in the old Heiser School. Since 2011 the "Torfweg" (peat trail) has connected the open-air museum by bike route with the school museum and the Großes Moor near Bokel; right next door stands the Heiser windmill from 1877.
