About the museum
On the castle hill above the Spree in Kirschau stood Körse Castle in the Middle Ages. It was conquered and destroyed by the Upper Lusatian League of Six Towns in November 1352 and was never rebuilt. Today, parts of the ring wall and a gateway of the outer bailey still bear witness to the complex.
The castle hill has been archaeologically investigated since 1922. The finds recovered there have been shown since 1995 in the castle museum, which was set up on Schloßberg in Kirschau. Alongside the finds, the exhibition includes a model of the castle and a presentation on the history of the castle and the village.
A local heritage room with a functioning hand loom recalls the rural life and crafts of the region. The museum is looked after by the Heimatverein Kirschau (local heritage association), which emerged in 2010 as the Heimat- und Historikverein from the older Heimatverein and has operated since 2024 as Körse Burg e. V. The association also organizes exhibitions on current and historical topics of the village at the site.
