About the museum

The single-storey linen weaver's house in Obersohland was built around 1750 and is regarded as the oldest surviving Umgebinde house in the district of Bautzen. It is one of the early L-shaped Umgebinde houses with an Ausgedinge (retirement quarters) and has been preserved largely in its original state; only the thatched roof was replaced with slate around 1900. The weaver's room, the Ausgedingestübel, a chamber, the threshing floor, the Banse (barn bay) and the stables are on the ground floor, the bedroom under the roof.

Since 1957 the house has served as the municipality's local history museum. It shows the living and working world of an Upper Lusatian home-weaving family: for centuries, weaving at the home loom provided a meagre income, with agents (Faktoren) selling yarn to the weavers and taking the finished goods, until industrialisation displaced home weaving. A loom that still works, tools for field and garden work, and people and animals living together under one roof bring this everyday life to life.

In 2007 the cultural monument was comprehensively renovated and was awarded the Umgebindehauspreis for it in 2008; in 2021 work on the windows, door and half-timbering followed with grant funding. Since then, audio stations in German, Czech and English have supplemented the guided tours, along with a dedicated story for children.
