About the museum
The collection of the Oberlausitzer Forstmuseum was built up in the years after 1990. Tools, machines, devices and books from forestry houses, as well as items from former colleagues and local residents, were rescued before they could be scrapped or thrown away.
The exhibition grew step by step: in 2001 the forest work room opened, in 2005 a forester's room followed, and in 2007 a presentation on forest surveying and forest maps. Later the exhibition "Historische Waldnutzungen in der Oberlausitz" was added, realized with support from the Euroregion Neiße.
A partner in this project was the Mittlere Forstschule, which created the forestry museum in the castle of the neighboring Czech town of Šluknov. Both border-area museums were linked so that citizens of both countries would notice them more. The museum is located in Sohland an der Spree, where the local history museum "Altes Weberhaus" can also be visited.
