About the museum
In 1505, the most important Marian pilgrimage in the Diocese of Würzburg began at a devotional pillar in the vineyards of Dettelbach. Since then, believers have made their way to the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary of Dettelbach, a Vesperbild (pietà) showing Mary with her dead son on her lap.
In keeping with the character of the place, the Art Office of the Diocese of Würzburg established the museum "Pilger und Wallfahrer" (Pilgrims and Pilgrimages) in 2008; the city of Dettelbach is the sponsor. It is integrated into the Culture and Communication Center (KUK) between the old town hall and the parish church.
The collection is housed in the Baumann House, a half-timbered building from the 15th century, joined to a two-story modern annex. Across roughly 335 square meters, artworks from the Middle Ages to the present form an arc between past and present. The focus is on the Dettelbach pilgrimage, the miraculous image and the question of how artists of every era have portrayed human suffering and compassion; votives and votive pictures refer to refuge and help at pilgrimage sites.
