About the museum
The museum was founded in 1997 on the grounds of the former farmers' trading cooperative in Dargen on the B 110 on the island of Usedom. The impetus came from enthusiasts of East German motorcycles, who first set up a two-wheeler museum. In countless voluntary hours, the association's members restored vehicles and converted the buildings for exhibition purposes.
The two-wheeler display has since grown into an extensive collection. Alongside mopeds and motorcycles such as the AWO, makes from the socialist neighbouring countries and invalid carriages, there are cars from the Framo to the Tatra, vans and ambulances, fire-fighting equipment, tractors, NVA (East German army) vehicles, an S4000 truck, an Ikarus government bus and a double-decker bus restored by the association.
A second focus is everyday life in the GDR: cameras, household appliances, toys, radios and televisions, documents from identity cards to house books, as well as medals and badges. A Konsum shop, an ABV (local police officer) room and a “gute Stube” (parlour) have been recreated. The museum includes a small shop and an association-run restaurant that serves typical GDR dishes such as solyanka on historic Mitropa crockery. The dining room itself is also furnished with display cases, furniture and radio cabinets from that era, so that the tour can come to a fitting close there.
