About the museum

The Muzeum Rybołówstwa Morskiego w Świnoujściu (Maritime Fisheries Museum in Świnoujście) is housed in the former town hall, one of the oldest buildings in the town. The two-storey classicist building with a high roof was erected in 1805–1809, and in 1839 an openwork turret was added. Above the entrance is the town’s coat of arms, with the Pomeranian griffin and an anchor.

The museum’s collections concern the history of the town, the port and fishing. The main part of the exhibition on deep-sea fishing consists of models of fishing vessels operated by the Przedsiębiorstwo Połowów Dalekomorskich i Usług Rybackich “Odra” (“Odra” Deep-Sea Fishing and Fishery Services Company) in Świnoujście, including lugger trawlers, freezer trawlers and factory trawlers. These are complemented by models of fishing nets, ship’s compasses, bells, lifeboat radio sets, a foghorn, a ship’s wheel, and photographs and souvenirs brought back from the sea by fishermen.

In other rooms you can see natural history exhibitions devoted to the fauna of the seas and oceans, aquaria with a living coral reef from different corners of the world, and a collection of amber with inclusions. The museum also presents models of sailing ships and ceramics connected with Świnoujście, and organises temporary exhibitions.
