About the museum
The Berlin Airlift Memorial in Faßberg opened on 2 March 1990. It was prompted in 1988, on the 40th anniversary of the airlift, by a visit of former American pilots to the air base, which led soldiers of the Luftwaffe Technical School 3 to look more closely into its history. Today the museum is the military history collection of the Luftwaffe Technical Training Centre (TAusbZLw), supported by the association for the Berlin Airlift Memorial founded in 1994. The collection consists of photos, certificates, documents, uniforms and objects donated by eyewitnesses, veterans and local people.
Faßberg was one of the most important departure points of the airlift: of the roughly 2.2 million tonnes of freight flown into blockaded Berlin in 1948/49, about 540,000 tonnes came from here. The exhibition honours the achievement of the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Royal Air Force (RAF) at the base and their cooperation with the German workers of the German Civil Labour Organisation (GCLO), who loaded the coal.
The history of the base and the airlift is presented in four Nissen huts, two railway wagons, an exhibition container with a viewing platform, the Airbridge Club and the open-air area with an original Douglas C-47 and sections of the Berlin Wall. The site is aimed at visitors aged about ten and over. Since 2006 it has been officially recognised as a memorial and is also used for the education of soldiers and school pupils.
